Muscle Plays a Vital Role In Your Overall Health

Muscles play a vital role in supporting overall health and wellness, especially as you age; it is a critical factor in metabolic health, body weight control, and bone strength.  The dangerous consequences of muscle loss and fat gain makes making healthy muscle especially important in middle age.  Muscle, unfortunately, is a use-it-or-lose-it kind of tissue.

In the last decade there  has been a lot of research on muscle tissue in the elderly and middle aged adults on sarcopenia (loss of muscle with a direct correlation of additional fat) and the results show  a steady decrease in muscle size that starts around age 50 and accelerates with time.  To add insult to injury muscle decrease doubles if you’re over 60. This puts the baby boomer population at a high risk for muscle loss and fat gain, leading to obesity.  But it doesn’t just affect the middle aged and elderly: in people who don’t regularly exercise, muscle loss starts around age 20.

To maintain muscle health, you need two major components,  a healthy lifestyle designed around physical activity and proper nutrition.  The physical activity needs to involve  resistance training and stretching and the nutrition needs to control carbs to proteins!

Lets talk about the diet because that is the hardest to follow and has a huge impact on muscle health!

The importance of muscle health is the critical difference among weight loss diets. There are many diets and nutrition companies that make claims about rapid weight loss, but the secret they want to hide is they also cause muscle loss. That’s a critical factor when you evaluate a weight loss program. People tend to ask “how much weight can I lose in the shortest period of time?”  What they should be asking  “is it a proven weight loss program, and what are the proportions of fat and muscle lost?”  Loss of muscle means you have damaged your metabolism and you are virtually guaranteed the weight will return (note: research shows 93% of weight is regained within one year with these fad diets); and even worse the weight that returns will be all body fat increasing the risk for diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and osteoporosis. If you lose muscle during weight loss, the muscle loss will be permanent increasing your metabolic risks and accelerate aging.
